The ChexSystem Inc Company is located in Woodbury, MN that shares information with the credit unions, banks and other financial institutions that may have an interest in check fraud and identity theft.
ChexSystems is a credit bureau that holds information on you and other citizens, you can find out what information they hold on you by asking to see your credit report- which by law you can do free once a year. When financial institutions think that a person is a financial risk, either because checks have been returned unpaid due to insufficient funds, or because they believe there is fraudulent activity on the account, they notify ChexSystems. ChexSystems may inform financial institutions that report to them of any other items on an individual's credit report, which can result in the bank freezing your checking account without prior notice. There is a major problem with Chexsystems and other companies like them, and that is the fact that data they keep on individuals may often be out of date and in error. ChexSystems say that they keep items listed on your credit report for five years; however there are times when these items may remain longer than the stated period. If you have had your account closed without prior notice, then it is probably due to a company like ChexSystems. While this company will share information that they have on you with your bank, apart from letting you see the credit report, which means that you don't know what data they hold on you whether or not the data is correct.
If you do have trouble with your bank and you think that ChexSystems or a company like it holds data on you that me be incorrect or out of date, although you can ask for items that you deem correct to be removed, this is quite hard for the individual to do.
